Kuinka rock-musiikki rantautui Suomeen?
Rock-musiikki syntyi Amerikassa 1950-luvulla, jolloin Suomessa kukoisti vielä tanssilavakulttuurin kulta-aika. Tuona aikana oman maamme suosikkeihin lukeutui Olavi Virta, joka oli aloittanut uransa jo 30-luvulla. Suurimman osan tuotannostaan Virta levytti juuri 50-luvun aikana, jolloin rockin kulta-aika alkoi. Tuohon samaan aikaan kansa oppi rakastamaan uusia iskelmätaivaan tähtiä Eino Gröniä ja Annikki Tähteä. Suurimmat musiikkilajit Suomessa olivat vielä tango ja iskelmä ja rokkiin suhtauduttiin aluksi hyvin varauksellisesti ja sen uskottiinkin olevan nopeasti ohitse menevää muotihullutusta.
Rockin 1950-luku Suomessa
Rock-musiikki aiheutti Suomessa varsinaisen nuorisokulttuurin, kun se valloitti pohjoisen maamme 50-luvun puolessa välissä vihdoin todenteolla. Ensimmäiset nuorisolle suunnatut lehdet alkoivat ilmestyä, joista uraa uurtavana Ajan sävel -lehti aloitti vuonna 1955.
Suomen levylistojen toiselle sijalle nousi Bill Hayleyn esittämä kappale Rock Around the Clock ja samana vuonna -56 poliisi oli huolissaan mahdollisista nuorisomellakoista, joita samannimisen elokuvan julkistaminen saattaisi tuoda tullessaan. Turussa poliisi jopa kielsi rock-konserttien järjestämisen, sillä he olivat huolissaan huligaanien toiminnasta ja tämän uuden musiikkityylin vaikutuksista paikalliseen nuorisoon. Rock-musiikki siivitti aikaa, jolloin nuoriso vapautui vanhempiensa tavoista ja halusi luoda uudenlaisen maailman itselleen. 60-luvulla naisten kampaukset muuttuivat ja tasa-arvoisuus nousi keskusteluissa suureksi aiheeksi, sotia vastaan marssittiin mielenosoituksissa ja musiikilla oli kaikkeen suuri vaikutus.
Suomirock
Suomirock ilmestyi vasta paljon myöhemmin ja nimekkäimmät yhtyeet sekä laulajat tulivat markkinoille vasta 1970–1980 luvuilla. Rokin alkuaikoina paikalliset laulajatähtemme esittivät suomalaisia versioita kansainvälisistä hiteistä. Vasta Dingon ja Eppu Normaalin myötä Suomi sai kotimaisia hittejä kuultavakseen.
Televisio ja rock-musiikki
Suomalaisessa televisiossa rock soi monien eri musiikkiohjelmien kautta kaiken kansan korville. Radiossa rock-musiikkia soitettiin 50-luvulla, vaikka moni vielä kuunteli mieleisintään musiikkia eli iskelmää, tai jos halusi tulla tituleerattavan intellektuelliksi – jazzia. Vuonna 1959 Suomi sai oman rock-kuninkaansa, kun samannimisiä kisoja isännöi televisiossa Onni Gideon. 16-vuotias koulupoika Kaj Järnström kruunattiin kilpailun voittajaksi ja ansaitsi siten itselleen nimen Rock-Jerry. Jerryn esiintyminen oli energistä ja laulutyyli aggressiivista, vaikka repertuaariin kuului toki balladejakin.
Olavi Virran laulama Rock and roll valssi on ensimmäinen Suomessa levytetty kappale, jonka nimessä on sana rock mukana. Vaikka kappale oli puhdasta iskelmää, ammensi se nimellään ajan muotitermistöstä ja sai osakseen haluttua kiinnostusta. Suomessa rockin alkuaikoina kuuluisimmista englanninkielisistä kappaleista tehtiin paikallisia käännösversioita, mutta tyyliltään ne eivät olleet kovin rock-henkisiä.
